This is actually OUR car on the highway crossing over into Wyoming!
So little traffic we could stop and take a picture! Wow!
There is an Indian legend about how this tower was formed: One day two little girls were out playing around the rocks in a meadow when a bear happened to spot them. Hungrily he rushed over but the girls saw him just in time.
They ran away and jumped up on a nearby rock. Of course the rock wasn't high enough to get away from the bear so they called out to the great spirit to save them.
Suddenly the rock began to grow and shot high into the sky. The bear kept trying to jump to the top of the rock, but he just scratched the rock and fell down on the ground. His claw marks are still on the rock today.
The rock kept growing until it was high into the sky and the girls are still safe and sound at the top today.
Pretty nifty huh? So, in the month of June no one is allowed to climb Devils Tower except Native Americans. We actually saw one young man climbing the tower. Wow!! I was wondering if he was doing it without ropes even!?
We hiked all around Devils Tower and then we hiked out into a field where the prarie dogs have tunnels all around. They are so cute and cautious in their little homes. There were even some cutie baby prarie dogs! *grins*
I was amazed how much this field smelled like my Grandma Dyers house (my Mom's mom). It was like cherries and fresh grass, so yummy!
After Devils Tower we continued on to a Wild Horse Refuge. I didn't even know there WERE wild horses anymore!?! There was amazing canyon-like scenery all around, but we were starting to get convinced there were no wild horses.
Then all of a sudden we rounded a corner and ran into a little herd which included a baby and a Mommy horse with another baby on the way!
Such a sweet ending to yet another glorious vacation day!
