Boy we woke up bright and early this morning! I was in the shower by 5:15am!! We had high hopes of being on the road by 6:00. After getting ready and grabbing a bite to eat from Denny and Cecilia, all the while admiring their GORGEOUS new granite kitchen counter tops, we were on our way by 6:30 in the morning!
We drove for about two and a half hours and arrived in Omaha, Nebraska where we were stopping to see the zoo. The college baseball world series just happened to be going on today RIGHT next door to the zoo!! OHMYGOODNESS was traffic ever backed up! Luckily we got to park in "zoo only" parking and headed right inside.
This is SUCH a beautiful zoo. Certainly the best I've ever been to *grins* and I've seen quite a few. I love the way there are so many different buildings with different themes; the desert, rain forest, big cats, apes, an aquarium, wow!
We were even lucky enough to see a baby sea lion who was only a few hours old. It was born at 12:30am the morning before we arrived.
The desert building had a "creatures of the night" area that was underground and so dark! There were all sorts of bats and a Bayou area with a neat wooden boardwalk that wound around just over the crocodiles! Eeek! In the dark it was so creepy like they might brush up against your leg or something *laughs*
They also have a beautiful butterfly area with all different species of butterflies. I especially like the purply blue ones!
The aquarium was the highlight of the zoo for me. There is a glass tunnel with fish, sharks, stingrays and turtles swimming ALL around you! Soooo cool! Kenny and I were happily pointing out ones that we've seen on some or our snorkeling adventures.
We left the zoo around noon and continued on our way. We drove and drove and drove and drove and actually crossed through FIVE different states (not including Oklahoma the day before).....Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri (hi Neil & Julie), Iowa and finally stopped in South Dakota!
We arrived in Rapid City South Dakota about 6:30 and decided to get checked in and settled for the night since we had another early morning ahead of us. We went out to McDonald's for dinner and then back to the hotel and to bed.
I am so thankful for sweet Kenny driving ALL that time. I always offer to drive, but he chivalrously stays behind the wheel and keeps us safe.
